Priorities

Have you ever thought, “I don’t have time to do everything I’m supposed to do.”?

Our priorities are the things that take “first place” in our lives. They receive the most of our time and our attention. When our priorities get out of sync our lives get messy. We end up frazzled, unproductive, and discouraged, because we are trying to wear all the hats and do all the things.

Sometimes we don’t even realize our priorities are out of line.

But Ephesians 2:10 says that God has prepared in advance good works for us to do. He has all ready prepared our to-do list.

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Ephesians 2:10

The enemy loves it when we fill our to-do list with our OWN priorities. He loves frazzled, unproductive, and discouraged people. That’s the perfect ground for him to come in and do his destruction. He knows that when we try to wear all the hats and do all the things we aren’t truly effective in anything.

Rarely do we realize that one of the tactics of the enemy is to keep us overwhelmed and overworked.  He wants us in this constant state of mind so he can distract us from our God given purposes.

Listen to me, feeling frazzled, unproductive, discouraged, overwhelmed, overworked, and ineffective is NOT what God wants for you! Jesus came so we may have life and have it more abundantly. God wants you to have a life full of peace and prosperity.

What are some of the priorities in your life?

What are you putting first?

I want to encourage you to stop and examine them. If meeting with God, praying, and being in the Word isn’t number one, maybe it’s time to realign your priorities. We must first seek His Kingdom, so that everything else comes together. Psalm 1 promises prosperity to those that place God’s instructions first in their lives.

Pray that He shows you what priorities belong in your life, in this season. Ask Him to help you remove what doesn’t. Ask Him to align your paths with exactly what He has planned for you.

Ask Him again and again and again.

You don’t have to wear all the hats, you don’t have to do all the things. You only need to do what HE is asking you to do.

There are only five true priorities in my life.

  • Living a God first life
  • Being an exceptional wife
  • Being an exceptional mother
  • Being healthy & happy-mind,body, and soul
  • Giving my very best to all areas of ministry God has blessed me with (family & friends, homemaker, career, blogging, and serving our church).

If it doesn’t align with these things- it’s not a priority. These are listed by order of importance to me. If the item on my to-do list doesn’t align with at least one of my main priorities then it gets crossed off. I don’t think twice about.

Proverbs 31:16 instructs us to carefully consider saying yes before we do so. Our yes shouldn’t mean we neglect our main priorities.

She considers a [new] field before she buys or accepts it [expanding prudently and not courting neglect of her present duties by assuming other duties]; with her savings [of time and strength] she plants fruitful vines in her vineyard.

Proverbs 31:16

I’ve learned to strengthen my “no” in the past few years. It took realizing that I only need to have time for the things God is asking me to do, not what everyone else is asking me to do.

I was once the frazzled, unproductive, discouraged, overwhelmed, overworked, and ineffective woman trying to wear all the hats and do all the things. Once I began asking God daily to align my paths with His Will and order my priorities I started to feel a lot more peace, joy, and contentment in my life. I’m still incredibly busy, but it’s a blessed kind of busy.

Anytime I start to feel those old feelings creep back into my life, I know that my priorities are out of order, and it’s time to step back and seek God for help.

“I don’t have time to do everything I’m supposed to do.” is a lie. If God wants you to do it, you will always have the time, the will, and the strength to do it.
