“Doubtful Ten or Faith-filled Two: Fixating on Problems or Trusting in God’s Strength?”

In Numbers 13:27-28, Moses received a report from the scouts he had sent to explore the Promised Land: “We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit. But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of Anak.”

This account reveals the perspective of the ten spies who, upon seeing the challenges, doubted their ability to possess the land (Numbers 13:31). They focused on the problems and lost sight of the victory that God had promised.

However, two other spies, Joshua and Caleb, saw things differently. They were ready to conquer what God had promised (Numbers 13:30). Their focus was on the great power of God, and they believed and had faith that He was stronger than any giant they might face.

Reflecting on these verses, I wondered if I was more like the ten spies or more like Joshua and Caleb. Often, in pursuing my passions, I encounter giant-sized problems.

Do I focus more on the problems than on the strength and power of God to help me conquer them?

This question is crucial because, if we’re not careful, we may become more like the ten spies and miss what God has for us on the other side of the problems we face. I definitely want to be more like the faith-filled two, trusting in God’s strength, than like the doubtful ten, fixated on problems!

So, how do we become more like Joshua and Caleb?

  • Focus on God: Keep our eyes fixed on God, acknowledging His strength & power.
  • Give the problem to God: Trust that He answers our prayers and petitions. Worrying does not solve problems.
  • Worship and praise: Thank Him for helping us even before the problem is solved. Activate our faith and belief that He can and will.
  • Maintain a positive attitude: Be content and remain in a posture of gratitude for all that is going right.
  • Believe in our capability: Trust that we can do anything God has called us to do because God is greater than any problem we face.

May we learn from the faith-filled example of Joshua and Caleb, choosing to focus on God’s power rather than the challenges before us!

Dear Father,

I pray for the strength to keep my eyes on You. Help me trust that You hear my prayers and know my heart. I want to thank You ahead of time for helping me tackle this big problem in my life. I’m grateful for all the good things happening and the beautiful blessings You’ve given me.

I believe You’ve placed me exactly where I should be, doing what I’m meant to do. I know You’re bigger than any problem I face. I praise Your Holy Name and thank You for the victory I have in You.

In Jesus Name,

Amen
